In the future, all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers. Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?
1. Writing Sample
In light of momentous technological leaps in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and sensory gadgets in recent years, several powerhouses in the automotive industry, such as Tesla and Google, have successfully manufactured electronic automated cars with trivial human involvement. Given this, the prospect of fully autonomous cars being rolled out and dominating our roadways would be viable in the foreseeable future. While such a development is not without drawbacks, I reckon that the benefits will justify these.
On the one hand, robotic cars ruling our roadways would be indeed problematic. One of the biggest hurdles is that by being operated by a computer system, this type of vehicles is prone to technical glitches, which can lead to its malfunctions on the journey. As a consequence, traffic accidents could occur, and this matter will be exacerbated if there are passengers on board. Another detrimental impact of the advent of unmanned cars is that it can give rise to a higher unemployment rate in the nation. In fact, those who are employed as truck, bus, taxi or Uber drivers would find their career obsolete in an autonomous future.
However, it is my belief that humanity could reap more substantial benefits from driverless cars. Plenty of evidence suggests that the vast majority of road collisions involve human error as a contributory factor. Therefore, letting computers control the vehicle, which helps eliminate reckless behaviors such as driving under the influence of alcohol or speeding, would save thousands of lives every year. Increased road safety aside, those who are challenged by existing mobility models, like older or disabled travelers, may be able to enjoy significantly higher travel autonomy owing to cars with self-driving capabilities.
In conclusion, although the introduction of driverless vehicles could trigger dire repercussions, I am of the opinion that they are overshadowed by the enormous advantages. (305 words)
